The first railway station in Lakefield was built in 1870 by the Port Hope, Lindsay & Beaverton Railway. The line officially opened for traffic on January 1, 1871, operating as a branch line running north from Peterborough.
The structure that still stands today was built in 1902 by the Grand Trunk Railway. It is a single-storey frame building featuring a hip roof and a central gable dormer.
